Fundraiser Sam Dyke

4th Feb 2017:  Sam Dyke is raising funds for the Breck Foundation*, by committing to keep away from all technology (TV, screens, play station, internet, etc.) for a total of six days.

If you’d like to support Sam, either go to Sam’s JustGiving page* (where donations can be GiftAided, and go direct to the Breck Foundation), or there’s a sponsorship form and collection box at Village Greens Friday Shop at the Jubilee Hall.

Many of us from within Warleggan Parish will know Sam, who does a lot to support our Village Greens Friday Shop behind the scenes, helping to set up and clear up every Thursday and Friday.

Here he explains what he’s doing, and why …

“I was really affected when I heard the news three years ago, and it made me more upset when the documentary Murder Games went out on BBC Three. I spoke to the late boy’s mother via the Breck Foundation Facebook Page, I was inspired by her story, and wanted to help. I hope you guys and girls want to help too! Any donation however small is welcome. I am on my side committing to stay offline, and away from all screens, gadgets, and my beloved PS4, for two three-day stints: 7th to 9th, and 14th to 16th February 2017.”

The Breck Foundation’s mission is to educate young people how to keep safe when using the internet. Through education and awareness we teach young people that their relationships online are not like real life friendships, that they should not disclose personal information and never arrange to meet with someone who has befriended them online alone and in a private place. We do this by sharing the real life story of Breck Bednar (see photo), a 14 year old boy from Caterham, Surrey,  who was tragically groomed online and lured to his death in February 2014.
