Big Do in the Field 2014

Big Do July 2014
Big Do 2014 – a triumph in face painting

Our ‘Big Do’ was held this year on Saturday 26 July 2014 at the field directly opposite the Jubilee Hall, Mount  (see directions). See our photo gallery.

OK, we call it a ‘Big Do’, and it is, for the size of the parish. But in essence it’s a family-friendly laid back afternoon out, where locals and outsiders can relax and enjoy themselves in a peaceful environment and warm atmosphere…

Events held on the day included:

  • 12 noon: Children’s Fancy Dress competition
  • 1 pm: Children’s Races
  • 2 pm:Dog Display
  • 3 pm: Family Dog Show (see schedule of classes)
  • and then approx 4pm: prize-giving, raffle draw

We had our ever popular barbecue tent (a meat one and a vegetarian one), a bar, cream teas, cake stall, raffle (with some great prizes this year – see below), tombola, guess the weight, face-painting, candy floss and old fashioned sweets with a hoopla too… –  and some of us had a go at Smite, Petanque, or Welly Wanging!  We also had a bouncy castle and some classic cars on display, along with some car boot stalls.

Plus we had the ever popular Annual Vegetable, Flower and Handicraft Show in the hall opposite – see schedule of classes and entry form.

Big Do 2014 posterFunds raised were to support the Jubilee Hall, except for the teddy tombola and loom bands stall run by the brownies, and the bouncy castle and a tabletop stall raising money for the Scouts Jamboree.

It was a brilliantly hot day, and lots of people came along and were very generous – meaning that we raised over a thousand pounds for hall funds, which not only enables us to continue to make the hall available for community activities at very attractive rates, but has also allowed us, amongst other things, to buy our own table tennis table and equipment, which is great news for the many who, in a survey held earlier this year, indicated they would like to play

A big thanks to the children of Cardinham School who made some fantastic posters for us – see our gallery of Big Do posters. Thanks also to Geoff for making the field available, and of course to all the volunteers who have offered to help make the day a success.

Thanks also to those offering some great prizes for the raffle and other events –  at the raffle, we had, amongst other things, a £25 voucher for the Colliford Tavern*, a free full breakfast from Village Greens, a meat voucher from Robinsons Cornish Meat Company in Bodmin, and lots more, of course. Thanks also to Rogers for sponsoring the children’s races, and to Bricknells Toy and Nursery shop in Bodmin for the voucher prizes for the children’s fancy dress competition.

    1. Must we spoil the atmosphere with music basting forth, I just like to be able to chat with folk without having to shout or miss hear what they are saying and I am not in the least deaf but some people are hard of hearing. Lets just hear the chatter and laughter and the sound of children playing and enjoying themselves. Or am I an old fuddy duddy?!

    1. We got a few names from some wonderful people, some of whom came to the last hall committee meeting – but yes, the committee is still keen to have more volunteers to help make the day a success! 🙂
